Biography

Prof. Dr. Lim Lik Thai graduated from the Queen’s University of Belfast (UK) with multiple academic awards, before embarking on his post-graduate specialist training in Ophthalmology in the UK. The Ophthalmology training is extensive and not only covering general/comprehensive ophthalmology but also included sub-specialising in Glaucoma and Vitreo-retinal surgery/retina diseases through formal fellowships obtained from very competitive selection process.

Through his years of training and service in Ophthalmology in the UK, he had obtained the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) UK (a mandatory qualification to hold a substantive consultant post in the NHS UK) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth (UK)).

Prof Dr Lim was also active in contributing towards the development of Ophthalmology training and service delivery whilst in the UK through his membership of the various committees within the Royal College of Ophthalmologists UK and the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. In recognition of his contribution and commitment to Ophthalmology, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (FRCSEd).

His passion in teaching both undergraduate and post-graduate Ophthalmology through the years in the UK had been recognised with the award of Membership of the Academy of Medical Educators (MAcadMEd (UK)) and the Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of Edinburgh (MFSTEd).

He is also involved extensively in research and publication with over 65 peer reviewed publications in international journals, numerous presentations at international level meetings and being invited by various major international ophthalmology journals as their reviewer.

He is also the first person in the world to recognise and describe bilateral anterior uveitis as a side effect of erlotinib (a type of new cancer drug). Link to the article: https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-00613127/document

On the charity front, he had won multiple travel awards/grants to enable him to go to Benin (West Africa) to carry out eye clinics and various eye surgery for free utilising his own time.

After 15 years in the UK, Prof Dr Lim had returned to Malaysia as a Professor, Head of Department and senior consultant ophthalmologist currently base at the Ophthalmology Department, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) with visiting clinical and surgical services to the Sarawak General Hospital (KKM) Eye Department Service as well as the Eye Specialist Centre (ESC) Kuching (by appointment), KPJ Kuching (ad-hoc, by appointment).

It is the hope that the standard of eye care can be enhanced, especially in the sub-specialty areas, to give better sight to patients for a better quality of life.
