He has over 22 years of medical working experience with several Government hospitals in Malaysia as a Doctor, Physician and Gastroenterologist. He obtained his MBBS (Bangalore) in 1998 and MRCP (UK) in 2004. Thereafter, he completed his Fellowship of Gastroenterology with the Malaysian Ministry of Health by 2009 and was subsequently gazetted by MOH and registered with the Malaysian National Specialist Register as a Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Physician. Dr Ooi passed his SCE (Specialty Certificate Examination) Specialist Certificate in Gastroenterology (Conducted by the Royal College of Physicians, UK) in 2011 and earned his certification as a Certified Medical Impairment Assessor from the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) in year 2010. He has wide experience in the Gastroenterology discipline and attended training both locally and abroad in various centres, including at Selayang Hospital, where Malaysia’s premier Hepatology Centre is located, and in Australia and Japan where he had the opportunity to enhance his knowledge in advanced management of gastroenterology cases and therapeutic endoscopy.
Education and Fellowship:
He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in 2011, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians London in 2014 and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 2015. Dr Ooi also contributed to the development of the younger generation doctors through his teaching posts in Penang Medical College and AIMST College, where he was an Honorary Lecturer. He also sat in the committee of several boards of the MOH Gastroenterology subcommittee previously.
Research and Publications:
Dr Ooi has published his writing in books, articles, abstracts and posters. He has also presented posters and spoken at various meetings and conferences, both locally and abroad. He also played an instrumental role in facilitating Penang General Hospital’s organization of state and national level scientific meetings and medical updates.
